Hey, Southern Soul Academy community! Today, let’s delve into the intriguing world of open guard passes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Picture this: you’re on the mats, facing your opponent who has an incredible open guard. You are so frustrated – there are legs everywhere. Every time you think you’ve cleared them, another one gets thrown in your way. What do you do?! Let’s talk through it.

Understanding the Open Guard:

Open guard is a versatile position, allowing you to maintain distance and control, ready to sweep or submit. As a passer, your goal is to dismantle this guard and progress into a dominant position. Here are some fundamental concepts to grasp:

  1. Posture is Key: Maintain a strong, upright posture to avoid being off-balanced. Keep your back straight and hips low, creating a solid base.
  2. Grip Control: Gain control of your opponent’s grips on your sleeves, collars, or pant legs. Break their grips to limit their options and disrupt their balance.

Effective Open Guard Passes:

  1. Torreando Pass: Also known as the bullfighter pass, this technique involves controlling your opponent’s legs, moving them to the side, and passing their guard.
  2. Knee Slide Pass:  We have done this a lot last week – Utilize pressure and precision to slide your knee across your opponent’s thigh, leading to side control. Proper weight distribution is crucial here.
  3. Leg Drag Pass: Redirect your opponent’s leg to the side, creating an opening to pass their guard. Timing and swift movement are essential for this pass.

The Mental Game:

Beyond the physical techniques, mastering open guard passes requires a strong mental approach. Stay calm, patient, and observant. Understand your opponent’s movements and anticipate their reactions. Visualize your success, and trust in your training and instincts.
